First Nation Culture

First Nations culture is an integral part of our province. According to the Ministry of Aboriginal and Northern Affairs, there are over 16,000 members, mostly Mi'kmaq and Maliseet. The Mi'kmaq are found mainly in the northern and eastern regions of the province while the Maliseet are more dispersed from Madawaska in the northwest, along the Saint John River valley to the southern area of the province. To discover their culture and heritage, take part in one of their community celebrations called "Powwows". To find out more about these communities, please visit the Powwow Trail website.
